夫妙法难闻，知识难遇。印光大师，乘愿再来。常惭自许，德厚流光。专弘净土，兼护余宗。斥自力了脱，大胆欺心，而言辞切切。示佛力出苦，三根普被，而悲心殷殷。实末法不可多得之善知识，教内尊其为莲宗十三祖，良有以也。

大师留世文钞，合有百万余言，予前后阅至三遍，每念今人多皆繁忙，恐无暇通阅而错失胜益。故取其要义，撷录成册，约二十五万字。俾无暇者，亦能略窥全貌得其滋养。有余隙者，则通阅尤善也。

寄舟道人释源恒 敬白

Grand Master Yinguang came again in accordance with his vows. Calling himself the “Constantly Ashamed Monk,” he possessed profound virtue whose influence extended far and wide. He devoted himself principally to the propagation of Pure Land Buddhism while also safeguarding the other Buddhist traditions.

With earnest words, he cautioned against the presumption that one could readily attain liberation through self-power alone. With deep compassion, he revealed the path of deliverance through the Buddha’s power—a teaching embracing practitioners of superior, intermediate and lesser capacities alike. He was indeed a rare spiritual teacher in the Dharma-ending age and was rightly honored within the Buddhist tradition as the Thirteenth Patriarch of the Pure Land school.

The writings left by Grand Master Yinguang comprise more than one million Chinese characters. Having read them three times, I often reflected that many people today are exceedingly busy and may miss their profound benefit because they lack the time to read the complete collection. I therefore selected its essential teachings and compiled them into this volume of approximately 250,000 Chinese characters, so that those with limited time may still gain a general view of the whole and receive its nourishment. Those with more time are especially encouraged to read the complete writings.

撷录者简介 / About the Compiler of the Selected Passages

云水僧源恒，自号寄舟道人，鲁人，癸亥年生。乙未剃染，丙申圆具。后游历诸方，研教习禅。著有《寄舟道人文集初编》《论语之大乘菩萨精神》《性相一源说》等。摘录《宗镜录》《蕅益大师全集》诸要义，合计百万余字，并撰按语提挈文义，为初学者提供入道之方便。

The itinerant monk Yuanheng, who styles himself Ji Zhou Daoren (“The Wayfarer in a Drifting Boat”), is a native of Shandong and was born in a Guihai year. He entered monastic life in a Yiwei year and received full ordination in a Bingshen year. He later traveled widely, studying Buddhist doctrine and practicing Chan.

His works include A Preliminary Collection of the Writings of Ji Zhou Daoren, The Mahayana Bodhisattva Spirit in the Analects, and The Common Source of Nature and Characteristics. He has selected key passages totaling more than one million Chinese characters from the Zongjing Lu and the Complete Works of Grand Master Ouyi, and has added commentary to bring out and clarify their meaning, thereby providing beginning practitioners with an accessible point of entry into the Buddhist path.
